I swear in the past couple of months, everywhere I go on the internet people are being mean girls for no reason.

"Oh, EK," you might say, "it's the internet, that's normal."

Sure, plenty of people bitch on the internet, but I swear it's everyone everywhere now! I go on tumblr, it's a bunch of posts moaning about how people are reading books wrong, or not enough, or writing wrong, or listening to the wrong music or whatever the fuck. I go on youtube, same shit, and everyone is whining about some chick named Colleen Hoover. I go on reddit, some guy is whining in a youtuber's subreddit that when he said a movie was boring he didn't specify how it was boring (I'm not joking). I go on FFA and someone's making fun of a girl for having an unusual user profile (read: she uses complicated words and isn't ashamed of her interests), or they're losing their shit about how Young People These Days are literally causing 1984 to become real. Twitter is twitter, I don't go there. Every time I've ever went on Bluesky, it was because there was some drama there.

It's whine whine whine, bitch bitch bitch. It feels like nobody actually enjoys things anymore, and if they do, it's always inevitably connected to how superior they are to others. I know the world is an extremely shitty place right now, but surely all this energy is better spent trying to improve it, rather than making yourself and everyone around you miserable? I think the fact that there's only a handful of websites that just repost from each other and so all communities bleed into a bitter sludge. Like IDK, irony-poisoned assholes tended to be in their own spaces, now they're everywhere.

I guess you can say I'm contributing to this by making this post but. I do other things, as well, and in fact I try not to start drama. And I'm not saying any of this to say I'm better than people who do this, I'm just baffled and a bit saddened at the state of things. At this point, writing emails to academic supervisors and potential employers has been more fun that being on literally any website. WTF
